New year's resolutions!

When I've made them in the past, by the beginning of February, I've forgotten what they were!

New year's resolutions are a horrible way to set ourselves up to fail. One reason why they don't work is because they are often made in the days between Christmas and New Year, when we are living on left overs, cheese and chocolate, and nobody knows what day it is.

When everything gets back to normal, we realise that our resolutions were unrealistic and unachievable in relation to how much energy and time we actually have.

But we feel we're not allowed to give up, because that would make us quitters, so we feel bad about ourselves instead.

Another reason is because January is the wrong time of year to be starting on a big new project or idea. Plants are dormant, animals are hibernating, it's dark and cold and probably raining ☔ Spring is a much better time for that kind of thing.

It can be hard to let go of things though, and you might want to do something to mark a new calendar year.

One thing you can do is have a look and see if there is anything you can do to make life a bit easier and a bit nicer.

You could:

Eat breakfast by candlelight 🕯️

Keep nice hand cream by the sink (maybe you got some for Christmas)

Keep a spare pare of shoes and some tights or socks on the car or in your bag (lightweight ballet pumps, obviously not massive boots 🤪) for unexpected encounters with puddles.

I cannot tell you how much better my life has become since I gave up grating cheese!

I've realised that what I like about winter isn't so much the gloom as the contrast between the gloom outside and the light and warmth of inside. Not horrible overhead lights that are too bright, but cosy lamps and firelight.

It's that time again when everything is very busy

It's that time again when everything is very busy and the expectations we put on our ourselves are even higher than normal.

So what are you going to do this week so that you don't get lost in the chaos?

If you are stuck for ideas you could:

🐦 Take a few minutes every day for a creative project

🐦 Wear a colour you love

🐦 Have a nice chat with a friend

🐦 Go out for a muddy walk

I'm still knitting that same pair of socks, and all the footpaths round here are muddy!
