I often make colour schemes from photos using the computer, but this time I used coloured pencils instead. I have plans to draw the buds with the coloured pencils, but I've been putting it off a little bit because I might find it more difficult.

So in the meantime, I've matched my coloured pencil squares with embroidery thread. I'm not planning to sew with it though!

What would you do? 💖

I'm feeling inspired by the flowering currant outs

I'm feeling inspired by the flowering currant outside my kitchen window. So I've brought a few twigs inside to see what I might do.

The buds hold the promise of spring, even though it's still cold and grey. The colours are lovely, and in a couple of weeks there will be lots of flowers.

What I felt most inspired to do first was to draw them.

Lots of us are put off drawing by experiences when we were younger. There is the expectation that they have to be done a certain way, look a certain way, and that anything less than photographic perfection won't do.

I actually thought I couldn't draw for 30 years. It turned out that all I needed was a nudge in the right direction, the right drawing tool, and some practice 💖

Or more to the point, how does making things make us feel?

Sometimes it can make us feel happy and relaxed, which is great!

But it can make us feel other things as well: excited, motivated, energized, sad, frustrated, annoyed.

One of the reasons I stopped listening to Classic fm was because the implication was always that classical music is relaxing. Which sometimes it is. But it would be very limiting if that was all a person felt whenever they listened to classical music, regardless of what it was.

I find it depends what I am doing, and what mood I'm in. And how I want to feel affects what I choose to do.

One more winter colour scheme... I was on my way

One more winter colour scheme...

I was on my way home when I noticed the sunset, so I whipped out my phone and took a picture.

It's not an especially good photo. That's not why I took it! I wanted to capture the colours of the sunset, not put myself out there as a taker of fabulous photos.

So although it won't win any photography competitions, it is good enough for making a colour scheme.

And this is the point. You don't have to be brilliant at taking photos to use the pictures you do take to create colour schemes you can use for your projects, if you want to.
